PostSubject: Sami Yusuf   Sami Yusuf Icon_minitimeSun Dec 28, 2008 9:00 am

Sami Yusuf is a British composer/singer/musician who was born in July 1980. He was born into a musical family, thus music played an integral part in his life.

Sami learnt to play several instruments at a very young age and gradually began to show a keen interest in singing and composing. He studied music at several institutions and with renowned composers and musicians including composers from the Royal Academy of Music in London, one of the world most prestigious music institutions.

Sami has been composing from a very young age and his beautiful voice is supplemented by his extensive knowledge of music theory and harmony. He has also a good understanding of the Middle Eastern modes (or Maqams).

Sami is also a devout practicing Muslim who sees songs as a means of promoting the message of Islam and encouraging the youth to be proud of their religion and identity

The Al-Mu'allim Cover

Many people ask me what does the cover represent? It signifies the light of the prophetic message coming to illuminate the night of darkness. This is true for the time of the Prophet (S), when fathers used to bury their daughters alive; when tribal warfare was a daily routine over the most absurd of reasons; when slavery was accepted; when women were seen as chattel to be bought, sold and used; when equality was an unimaginable concept; and when injustice and misery reigned.

This is also true for today, where the world is living in darkness, where the biotech companies put profit before people’s lives, leaving tens of millions to die of Aids in Africa because they can’t afford the extortionate prices the medicine costs; where people are lost, looking for a purpose or for the meaning of this life; where humans’ daily life is that of a ferret on his wheel, toiling for money; where man’s mad worship of money is destroying our habitat, a manifestation of Allah’s saying: Corruption - has manifested itself on the land and in the sea due to what man’s hands have wrought...”; where the strong vanquished the weak; where materialism reigns.

It is our duty in this reality that faces to absorb the light of the prophetic message and to reflect that light onto the society in which we live, so that we can turn this darkness into light insha Allah.

General Comment

I would like to thank each and every one of you for your support, kindness, generosity and all the du’a you’ve made and continue to make for me. May Allah bless you all and grant us steadfastness and uprightness on the glorious and noble path of Islam.

Final Note

Allah is my witness and knows what is in my heart as I type these words for you, Wallahi, I am very proud to be part of the Ummah of our beloved teacher, prophet and guide: Muhammad Mustafa (SAS) and I am proud of you all. It’s my honour, duty and pleasure to be serving Allah (SWT) alongside all of you!

Please safeguard your Iman and faith by making sure you are in a blessed environment who are fearful of Allah and who will help you with your Islamic development. We must make sure to attend regular Halaqas, Islamic circles of knowledge (gatherings etc), and to always have the understanding that we should always be developing Islamically, i.e. memorising and understanding the Quran, attending circles and blessed gathering which will have righteous people who we can learn and benefit from. May Allah bless you all and may He grant us steadfastness, accept our repentance in Ramadan, forgive our sins, grant us prosperity and guide us to that which pleases Him – Amin Ya Rabb.

Wasalamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu

Sami Yusuf

the first allbum

Awakening and Sami Yusuf were greatly motivated to produce this project from the outset, and this motivation stemmed from a shared deep conviction that we have a duty to provide an Islamic alternative for the Muslim youth that is vibrant and enjoyable to listen to and is produced to the highest standards of composition, singing, harmonies, sound production and engineering, being in all these aspects a match for any albums produced by the Western music industry, and yet containing the beautiful teachings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

To this end, Sami Yusuf’s many talents, the best studios, sound engineers and equipment were brought together, no costs were spared and no shortcuts were taken, always keeping as our motto the hadith of the Prophet (pbuh):

“Verily Allah loves that if one of you does an action
that he perfects it.”

So, perfection in every aspect was our aim; thus Sami Yusuf spent many long hours in the studio programming, singing, playing the instruments and singing the main tracks as well as the harmonies and some of the backing vocals, and Barron, one of the best and most experienced sound engineers spent hundreds of hours recording, mixing, editing and mastering, using the best available studios and equipment to produce an album that is equal if not better in sound quality than albums produced by the Western music industry.

Islamic Art, whether in the form of calligraphy, tiles, or music is all inspired by divine love and beauty.

Music is a gift from God and is a tool which can be used but also (as it often is) misused. Indeed, nearly all Muslim countries have a rich history of Islamic spiritual music, each with its distinctive sound and flavour.

Unfortunately, due to many reasons, this heritage has long been in decline. It is my sincere wish that this humble album be one of the many artistic endeavours being undertaken to shape a new British-Muslim or Western-Muslim culture.

I also felt obliged and motivated to contribute through this album to the positive efforts already being undertaken by the Muslim community to show the real face of Islam as understood by the majority of Muslims which is one of peace and tolerance.
I hope that this album goes even a short way towards this aim, and I pray that God accepts it.
